ABOUT MEIKO WRAP: Meiko Wrap is designed especially for babies with special needs, and those we just want to keep close to us, whether they are our first or fifth child. They are suitable for children up to 15kgs. Meiko means ‘baby’ in the Oro language, Papua New Guinea. It is designed for comfort and security for the wearer. It is also stylish and versatile: baby can face mum (newborn), face outward, breastfeed while in public, sleep in it like a sling, or cuddle close to you to hear your heart beat, which research has found to cure many problems which arise in new born babes, and has a calming effect for older children. This is known as “Wearing your Baby”
Meiko Wrap is made from stretch cotton which makes it comfortable to wear and with its wide straps and a tie around the back keeping the cross to the centre of your back you have comfortable support for your back and shoulders.
The wrap simply goes over your head like a top, ties around the waist/hips back strap first, into a knot in the front strap through the loops at the back. You will notice a pacifier loop on the inside left strap and a mobile phone pocket on the waistband. There is a sewn in blanket to keep baby snug and secure. WHY I DESIGNED THE MEIKO WRAP: I tried using another 5 metre wrap but found it too difficult to use. Having a cardiac problem from birth, I am still coming to terms with this disability. As a single parent of 5 children - 3 teenagers and a 4 year old is also difficult to handle. I couldn't put the baby down to sleep when she was born because she would stop breathing, so I wanted to keep her close to me while I went about doing my daily chores and taking care of the then 3 year old. This is when the idea of a more secure and comfortable way for both myself and the baby came about. It felt so good to wear because the weight on my chest was relieved and my shoulders and back didn't hurt, my hands were totally free, and baby was secure.
